The Trace of Things
An Immersive Art & Writing Retreat at Coopershill House, County Sligo
24–31 October 2026
Join artist Tracy Sweeney and writer Marian Garvey for a unique week of creative exploration in the extraordinary setting of Coopershill House, a historic Georgian country estate in County Sligo on Ireland’s west coast.
Designed for artists, makers, writers and creative thinkers, this intimate retreat offers the opportunity to step away from everyday life and immerse yourself in a thoughtful and supportive creative environment. Inspired by the landscapes of Yeats Country, participants will explore painting, mixed media, sketchbooks, observation and reflective writing through a process-led approach to making.
The week will unfold as a balance of guided workshops, individual studio time, field research and shared experiences. Beginning with gathering ideas and inspiration from the Coopershill estate and the surrounding Sligo landscape, participants will be encouraged to develop their own creative responses through experimentation and enquiry.
A full-day excursion to some of the west coast’s most inspiring locations will provide opportunities for sketching, photography, observation and collecting visual material. Throughout the week, Tracy will lead demonstrations, practical exercises and one-to-one guidance, while writer Marian Garvey will offer optional writing sessions exploring memory, place and personal response to landscape.
With just eight participants, the retreat is intentionally small, allowing time for conversation, reflection and individual attention. Alongside the creative programme, guests will enjoy the warmth and comfort of Coopershill House, with beautifully appointed ensuite accommodation, exceptional food and the unique atmosphere of one of Ireland’s finest country houses.
